The Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson and UPS Partner to Keep Teens Safe Behind the Wheel

Carson, California – February 7, 2012 – The Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson (BGCC) has been awarded a UPS Road CodeSMgrant to provide the UPS Road Code safe driving for teens to 100 BGCC teen members each year. Through the program, BGCC members will learn the secrets to success on the road that UPS drivers have been practicing for over a century.  Through the program, BGCC members will learn the secrets to success on the road that UPS drivers have been practicing for over a century. KidsFest 2011 Success

Entertainment1_webKidsFest 2011, the 18th Annual Dinner and Benefit Auction for the BGCC raised over $170,000 for the 2,500 youth of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Carson. One of the highlights of the evening was a musical performance by Ellis Hall.  In addition, several of our high school members were hosted by Ellis at his studio in the weeks prior to KidsFest to collaborate on several musical numbers. Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson Partners with Ross Stores to Promote Academic Success for Young People

ES_Boys_PHCarson, CA – January 15, 2012– Ross Stores, Inc., is partnering with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Carson to sponsor its Power Hour program, an interactive after-school homework assistance program for members, ages 6 to 18.  

According to Diplomas Count 2010, nationwide 1.3 million youth will fail to graduate with their class.  Locally, graduation rates are an abysmal 56% amongst the Los Angeles Unified School District students. Today, youth are confronted with tremendous challenges, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances. Gerardo Rodriguez Jr. - 2012 Carson Youth of the Year

Gerardo_Rodrigue_YOY_2012Carson High School Senior Gerardo Rodriguez Jr. is the 2012 Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson Youth of the Year.  This six-year Club member was born in South Los Angeles and moved to Carson, CA during his 10thgrade year.  He joined the Club while attending Stephen M. White Middle School in the 7thgrade and he hasn’t looked back since.  In Middle School, Gerardo began developing his character and leadership skills while serving as a student tutor.  He continued serving his peers in High School as he tutored students and taught them how to play the guitar.  Read more...

The BGCC Invites Supporters to Donate 'Pennies From Heaven' at JCPenny

The BGCC is one of 1,100 afterschool organizations nationwide matched with their local jcpenny store that will benefit from the proceeds raised during their pennies from heaven campaign. As the leading corporate advocate for the afterschool issue, jcpenney is leveraging a cause marketing campaign to bolster national support through broadcast, print and online advertising as well as an engaging digital experience on jcp.com/pennies. Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson Climbs Aboard the Movie Express This Summer

With summer in full swing, parents want their kids active, engaged and entertained. With record summer heat, they also want some relief in a cool and comfortable place. Thanks to the partnership between Regal Entertainment Group and Boys & Girls Clubs of America, members regalcinema-logo1of Boys & Girls Club of Carson will enjoy the movies with the Summer Movie Express. Regal Entertainment Group is providing the Club with a grant to help cover expenses like transportation and tickets.

"Our Boys & Girls Club members are thrilled to participate in Regal Entertainment Group's Summer Movie Express," said Kim Richards, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson.  "The number of youth we serve at our Main Street facility in Carson nearly doubles in the summer months; therefore we're always grateful for opportunities that offer fun and engaging activities for our young people. Lebron's Decision Results in Generous Donation for Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson

s-LEBRON-largeThanks to the generous donation of the LeBron James Family Foundation, Nike and HP, Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson was able to strengthen its athletics and education programs for its members. The Club received a donation of 50 pairs of shorts, 125 jerseys and 24 basketballs from Nike. From HP, the Club received 16 state-of-the-art HP computers, one laptop and 15 desktops with monitors.  Each computer came with donated education and productivity software from Microsoft. LeBron's Family Foundation provided the Club with $2,000 in cash support to help to assist with the set up of any additional equipment or services needed I the tech center. In all, the donation totaled over $35,000 in value.

Bank of America Supports Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson

Bank of America Charitable Foundation announced that the Boys & Girls Clubs of America – Los Angeles County Alliance, which supports the 27 Boys & Girls Clubs located in Los Angeles County will receive a $150,000 grant. The check wasbofa-dodger-camp-2011 presented at Dodger Stadium to representatives of the Clubs and over 100 of their members as they participated in a ½ Day Dodger Camp hosted by Bank of America.

As part of the investment by Bank of America, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson will receive $3,500 to support after-school educational and arts programs and in addition will serve as a Title Sponsor to the LA County Youth of the Year program where a Club member from each Club will receive a scholarship to further their educational objectives. “We are very appreciative of Bank of America’s financial and volunteer investment for our Club. Bank of America is helping us in our mission which is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring responsible adults,” said Susan Moulton, Chief Volunteer Officer of the board of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson. Research Shows Benefit of Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson to Local Families

New Study Shows Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson Makes Major Impact on Children's Educational and Social Success

BGCC_BoyResults of a major new research study conducted for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson (BGCC) by California Lutheran University (CLU), show that the Club has a major positive impact on Carson’s youth by improving Club members’ grades, health, and social skills; providing a safe environment; and delivering important benefits to local families.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson’s research was part of a larger study, conducted for the Los Angeles Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs by CLU’s Damooei Global Research.

The comprehensive study demonstrated that for every $1 invested by the Clubs, the community receives $16.42 worth of positive economic impact. The study concludes that, “This tremendous rate of return is a testament to the vital role the Clubs play in shaping the lives and futures of Club members and their parents.”

82% of  members said that Club staff is able to help them with their homework
96% of members agreed that going to college is very important for their future life and success
90% of parents surveyed agreed that since attending the Club, their child has shown improvement in his/her school performance

Javier Frayre Wins Charles Schwab Foundation Scholarship Award

Money Awarded for Successful Participation in Financial Literacy Curriculum

Javier Frayre of Carson, California, has been named a $2,500 college scholarship winner for the Money Matters: Make it CountSM program provided by Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) and Charles SchwabJavier_Frayre Foundation. Frayre, a 3-year member of Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson, was selected because of his successful completion of the Money Matters financial education program and achievement in acquiring and applying personal finance knowledge and skills.

In addition, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson will receive a matching grant of $2,500 from Charles Schwab Foundation to help fund the Club’s work in continuing to provide Money Matters to Club youth.

Financial literacy is one of the foundations to securing a great future,” said Kim Richards, Executive Director of Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson. “Money Matters teaches basic financial skills and concepts in a way that is meaningful to teens. Javier has done an exceptional job with the program and has truly incorporated what he learned into his life.”

Nineteen other Boys & Girls Club teens from across the country are also being awarded Money Matters scholarships this year. To date, the Money Matters program has reached over a quarter of a million teens in 1,600 Boys & Girls Clubs throughout the nation. Charles Schwab Foundation has awarded 187 college scholarships, totaling $390,000, since the program’s inception in 2004.
