Exposure to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) is critical during a child\u2019s early years when natural curiosity drives interest and builds capacity for success in these disciplines. The BGCC programs are designed to promote interest and awareness of STEM among historically underserved groups, including girls and young people of color. The Club recently hosted two events that displayed members\u2019 passion for STEM.<\/p>\n
On May 28th<\/sup>, the BGCC hosted a VEX Robotics competition at the\u00a0Main Street Clubhouse with 3 teams from Towne, Bonita Elementary, and Main Street Clubhouse sites. The competition served as a culmination event for teams of elementary school students to design and build a robot to perform in a game-based engineering challenge. Team Lloyd, made up of four boys from Bonita STEAM Academy took first place with The Champions, made up of three girls placing second. Parent pride was evident as IKEA team members served as judges and provided goodies for participating families.<\/p>\n BGCC also hosted its Annual STEM Day at the Main Street clubhouse on April 30th, featuring students from John Muir, Markham, Rancho Dominguez Academy, Stephen White, and Carnegie Middle Schools. Members from John Muir Middle School placed first and third and a Markham Middle School student placed second.<\/p>\n Emmanuel H. impressed the judges, earning first place, with Fruita De Energia (Fruit Battery), a project that focused on the chemical reaction that makes electrons flow using lemons to generate electricity.
