Volunteer Spotlight, Nelida Casas

We love our volunteers! Without their time, talent, and passion, our work would not be possible. We got a chance to chat with long time Club volunteer Nelida Casas to learn more about her time as a volunteer at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson.

What is one accomplishment that makes you most proud of the volunteer work you’ve done at the Club?

I believe building a connection with the students, especially the older students in the program, is what I am most proud of. It is not always easy, but definitely worth it!

What do you love most about volunteering at the BGCC?

I love the kids! They motivate me to come in every day and volunteer for this organization. I also love that they feel comfortable coming to me when they need help with homework and other problems that they are facing.

In your eyes, how has the BGCC impacted the communities of Carson and South Los Angeles?

I believe the BGCC has a great impact on the community. Not only have I seen it here at Bonita Elementary, but also in South Los Angeles. The kids are growing up in positive environments away from the dangers of the streets.

Dream big!  If the sky was the limit, what is one thing you wish you could provide for your Club kids?

I wish I could split myself into 36 other students so I could be with everyone at the same time!

What would you say to anyone who is considering volunteering at the Club?

I would say that you should go for it! Volunteering with the kids motivates you to keep working with kids. The kids bring you life and happiness and you can see the benefits as you build relationships with them. The staff is very welcoming as well as the members who are there as well. It also has helped me to improve my leadership skills.

Do you have any closing thoughts for us?

I didn’t know about the BGCC until now and I am considering working with the organization because of my volunteer experience. I love volunteering here!

YOU can join Nelida in helping youth create a GREAT FUTURE by becoming a volunteer today!
