BGCC Club members are accelerating through Drivers Ed Training

“Stop the car!” a soft-spoken Club member, taking on the role of a police officer, commands. “Do you know why I pulled you over?” she asks, as she signals for a car of new teen drivers to pull over due to unsafe driving.

Samantha, who volunteered for the role of a police officer, begins to reference the material she is learning from her driver’s education course.

Mr. Eze, a Youth Development Profession at BGCC, led the driver’s education simulation, which involved role-playing scenarios to illustrate the various dangers of the road.

“I could tell they were paying attention because they were eager to follow the rules of the road as opposed to doing what was considered cool,” said Mr. Eze as he concluded the lesson with a conversation about making informed decisions as responsible motorists.

Learning to drive a car is a monumental event for many teenagers, one that comes with a great deal of responsibility. The UPS Road Code is a teen drivers program offered through the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

“My mom supports me coming to this class. She reminds me to come to UPS Road Code every Tuesday and Thursday,” says Samantha, whose mom is preparing her with behind-the-wheel practice in public parking lots.

The five-module program offers our Club members bi-weekly classroom instruction, group activities, and virtual reality simulations.

Upon completion of the UPS Road Code program, our members receive a certification that they can present to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), which waives the fee for the written exam required to obtain a learner’s permit.
